Our overseas clients will often contact us when trying to find a top British boarding school and will want to know what they can do to help prepare and support their applications to top schools in the UK. We have put together five top tips to keep in mind when considering independent schools in the UK. One thing to remember is that British boarding schools have different levels of selectiveness and each of us will have our own views and requirements on the concept of selectiveness. This list of tips will help support entry to either selective or non selective schools.
1. Start early
It is always preferable to make contact with UK boarding schools as soon as possible, even if you are at the enquiry stage. Some schools have very limited spaces and you may have to apply several years in advance in some cases. We recommend consulting with an experienced education advisor who will be familiar with the deadlines and lead times of a range of the top UK schools.
2. Work on transcripts and studies
This is an obvious point, but the earlier a student can work on their reports/transcripts and studies to fulfil their potential, then the stronger the application is likely to be. Remember, this does not have to be limited to academic attainment, schools will also be interested in volunteering, positive contributions to the community, attendance and conduct.
3. Participate in after school clubs
When trying to find a UK boarding school, it is worth remembering the extra curricular provision is extensive in many of them. It is always great to match a student with specific interests to schools that offer those particular activities. After school clubs are also a great way to develop soft skills, which all helps in supporting an application to a British boarding school.
4. Research the school
We recommend undertaking detailed research of your favourite UK boarding schools and this can be supported by an experienced education counsellor. We especially recommend speaking with a counsellor who has visited the school in person and recently as the schools are continually evolving and improving the student experience.
5. Ask the right questions
With so much choice out there for overseas families, it is important to ask the right questions when trying to find a UK boarding school. An experienced counsellor will be able to guide you as to the right questions to ask and explain why these questions are relevant to your own circumstances.
