Many top UK boarding schools operate a house system, depending on the size of the school. This is an interesting quirk and is often an interesting point for students who are joining from overseas. In our latest blog, we cover the key points of the boarding house system.

The house system is a traditional feature of top UK boarding schools. In some schools, there could be over 200 boarding students. One way to more effectively care for this number of students is for smaller houses to be formed. British boarding schools will each use their own system to decide exactly how to do this, but often you will find there will be Junior house/s, Senior Girls house/s and Senior Boys house/s.

The boarding houses will often have unique names, which carry meaning within the school. It is not unusual for the school tie to be unique to the boarding house, whilst the rest of the uniform matches. Houses will often have competitions at various points in the year, these could be sporting, singing or quizzes to name a few. This helps create a unique attachment and bond to the house and being attached to a certain house is often a fond memory and point in common with other Alumni in future years.

You will find top UK boarding schools will often have a dedicated house parent/s for each particular house, with them being supported by a team of deputies, housekeepers and sometimes a dedicated chef. The house parent often lives in an annex within the house and is the primary point of contact for pastoral needs. They also serve as excellent role models and help students to further develop their soft skills and development outside of the classroom. Students will often have the opportunity to become the house captain or prefect, taking on additional responsibilities for the benefit of the house community. Top UK boarding schools can be quite different in their approach, so we always recommend speaking to an experienced counsellor who has visited the schools in person and viewed the house system and accommodation. This will help ensure that the school is a good match for your needs.
