For boarding schools in the UK the school academic year runs from September through to August, which is not dissimilar to much of the world. However, you may not be aware that it is possible to secure a place at UK top schools that permit starting in January and offer flexible entry points to the world of independent schooling.
The best UK private schools and Sixth Form colleges are extremely experienced with supporting students who wish to join in January. There are a number of reasons why you might be interested in joining a school in January and you can be confident that you will not have to lower your standards - a place at a top UK private school will still be achievable.
UK boarding schools have students who join them from all over the world, with each school welcoming up to 200 new international students on an annual basis. Invariably there are any number of personal circumstances which ultimately may lead to a January intake being preferable. Travel and quarantine arrangements in your home country may mean that a September start was not possible, however the local situation may have improved to facilitate a January start. Schools have been widely commended for their flexibility in supporting students in these circumstances.
Similarly, students may choose to join in January as this complements their current academic timetable (which could run January to December). This allows for a seamless transition to the UK education system and can either be a reduction in total time or an extension to total time, depending on the prior learning of the students (i.e. 5 term A Level vs. 8 term A Level).
Many UK boarding schools plan to leave a number of bedrooms available during the year, allowing them to support students in circumstances similar to those above. It is also the case that students may be delayed in joining or personal circumstances mean they need to return home. This also provides further opportunity to join in January. A January start also serves as a wonderful induction to UK school life and British education, especially for those with English as a second language, where those first two terms can be very much focused on language acquisition and orientation. There are a number of schools, including those with over 60% A*/A who will be happy to consider January start dates because of all the circumstances outlined above. An experienced education expert will be able to recommend some options for you.
