Joining a British school in the UK in January is a common option for those arriving from countries where the school year is different. It is common for the school year to run from January to December in Malaysia and Singapore for example. Therefore, joining a top UK boarding school is a hugely convenient and viable option for students from those countries.
Secondly, we find that students around the world are now ready to begin their UK boarding education, but had not considered that they can join earlier than September because of the rigidity of their local education systems. Many of the top independent schools in the UK will accept students in January and April, in addition to September. Some schools will even offer options to join part way through the term. This is ideal for students who are ready to move and enjoy all the benefits of a British education now, but do not want to wait until next year. Similarly, students may not be enjoying their studies in their current local school and wish to make a change much earlier.
Thirdly, many of our clients contact us because they wish for their children to have a one or two term ‘induction’ before their boarding experience begins the following September. This is ideal for students who are joining from very different education systems and from countries where English is not the first language. This pathway allows students to adjust and acclimatise the British culture, academic system and the philosophy of the school for a gentle introduction to British boarding. Students who choose this pathway, often acclimatise quickly and hit the ground running the following September. We recommend speaking to a British education expert who will quickly be able to assess if you and your child will benefit and be well suited to a January intake. When we do this, we will look at your child’s current academic profile, their future aspirations and couple this with our knowledge of the sector and schools to analyse the options and provide you with all the information you will need. We also tend to recommend the specific course, curriculum or pathway - which is very useful in helping to pinpoint schools and for discussions with admissions staff regarding your application.
