Looking ahead to the coming year of 2022, we look forward to helping clients around the world searching for the best UK boarding schools and best UK private schools. The families we help will often ask about the holiday arrangements, so we’ve put together some of the key information with regards to the academic calendar.
If you are joining the UK education system from a school overseas, you may well have a different academic calendar, perhaps one that runs from January to December. UK boarding schools and UK private schools have an academic year that runs from September to August. It is worth noting, it is still possible to join many of the top UK boarding schools after September, with popular intakes being January and April. In fact, some high ranking UK boarding schools will be even more flexible - depending on the circumstances.
Broadly speaking, the academic calendar for top UK private schools will look like this:
-
Term 1 - often referred to as Michaelmas, runs from September until December
-
Term 2 - often referred to as Lent, runs from January to March/April
-
Term 3 - often referred to as Summer, runs from April to June/July
UK boarding schools and UK private schools refer to ‘Semesters’ as ‘Terms’, with use of the word ‘Semester’ being common in US schools and other international schools. For each of the terms above, there will be a short break, this period of a break is called a ‘half-term’. You will find UK boarding schools have slightly longer half-term breaks and term breaks than the state sector. A half-term in a UK boarding school is typically 7-14 days in length, depending on how the calendar falls that particular year.
Top UK boarding schools have relatively long term breaks at the end of each term, these are often referred to as the Christmas (term 1), Easter (term 2) and Summer (term 3) holidays. When considering the best UK boarding schools for international students, we recommend speaking to an experienced counsellor to discuss the plan for living arrangements during these holidays. Commonly, students would return home for the longer term breaks with some students choosing to stay in the UK for the half-term breaks - although this varies greatly depending on the distance the student is from their home country. There are provisions in place for those who will stay in the UK for both half-term breaks and term breaks and these will vary from school to school. The importance of understanding the holiday arrangements should not be underestimated, hence we always recommend talking to those with experience of the system.
