This is a question often asked by our overseas clients, particularly those looking at top UK boarding schools for students between the ages of 11-16. English, Maths and Science are known as core subjects and in nearly all cases will be compulsory for overseas students joining UK boarding schools. As these subjects are a formal requirement in nearly all independent school settings, the more appropriate question to ask would be ‘What is the benefit of studying English, Maths and Science?’

The obvious advantage of gaining exposure to Maths, English and Science at British boarding schools from an earlier age is the flexibility this will offer with regards to future plans and potentially career objectives. If a student wishes to study A Level or IB, top UK private schools will require at least a basic level of C (Grade 4) for English, Maths and Science, quite often it could be A or B (9-7 in the new system). After A Level or IB study, many Universities will also have similar requirements. Good grades and experience of English, Maths and Science tells the school you have the ability required to be able to succeed in your further study, it could well be the difference between being offered a place or not being offered a place. Furthermore, skills in these subject areas are highly valued by future employers and indicate a basic level of competence and comprehension which may be a prerequisite for some organisations.

As an overseas student considering top British boarding schools, it can be difficult to understand the significance of these subjects, especially if coming from very different education systems. The teachers will inform students that the subjects will equip them with vital life skills you will use going forward – this is very true. Furthermore, learning these courses in English (for those with English as a second language) helps broaden the vocabulary acquisition and immersion into the English language. This brings obvious secondary benefits when aiming to achieve fluency - in other words, exposure to English across a range of subjects will help support the learning of new words.
