When considering a shortlist of British boarding schools, our clients, particularly those with no experience of UK boarding or who live overseas will often wonder how certain elements of everyday boarding life work. One common question we are consistently asked is ‘What is the school’s mobile phone policy?’

There can be several reasons as to why this is an important question to ask when finding a UK boarding school. Many families based overseas will want to know if their child is permitted to have their phone close by in case of emergencies and it might be convenient for them to have it with them during the day in the event they may wish to make a quick video call to catch up whilst in another timezone. Conversely, many parents contact us with concerns that too much time is spent on the phone and they would like to find UK boarding schools that have a strict policy on the use of mobile phones.

You will find that each school will set its own policy with regards to mobile phone use in school. Generally speaking, you will find British boarding schools permit use of mobile phones outside of classroom or teaching hours - meaning family catch up calls can take place in mornings, evenings, weekends or even lunchtime in some cases. Whether the phone is to be kept in the boarding room or with the student will depend on the individual policy of the school. Some of the more contemporary schools will have a more relaxed attitude towards this. The consequence of using a phone in lesson time will also vary, but you will find it is often the case that the phone may be confiscated and the student will have to collect it at the end of the day.

Within the boarding environment, you will find UK boarding schools also have different policies as to phone use outside of classroom hours. Some schools request all phones be kept with the houseparent overnight and are then returned the following morning, this can be applied most often to younger settings, such as Junior boarding houses although some Senior schools do enforce this. You will also find British boarding schools may restrict or limit WiFi after a certain time (e.g. 11pm) to create an environment conducive to adequate rest. Ultimately, each school has its own culture and identity and the mobile phone policy will be a reflection of that and what works best within that particular context to facilitate learning.
